The Science of Sleep

Your sleep is run by a body clock. Deep in the brain sits a small cluster of neurons called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which functions as your internal 24-hour clock. It's synchronized primarily by light hitting your eyes — specifically a type of retinal cell that responds to light and signals directly to this clock, largely independent of your visual system.

Morning light matters more than most people realize. Bright light exposure early in the day helps anchor your circadian rhythm, improving alertness during the day and making it easier to fall asleep at a consistent time at night. This is the mechanism behind light-based wake-up alarms: gradually brightening light before your alarm sounds mimics a natural sunrise and can ease the transition out of deeper sleep stages, which is generally more comfortable than waking abruptly to sound alone.

Evening light works in reverse. As natural light fades, your brain increases production of melatonin, a hormone that signals it's time to wind down. Bright artificial light in the evening, especially blue-enriched light, can suppress this process and delay sleep onset.

On weighted sleep products: the idea behind deep-pressure input (like weighted blankets or masks) is that firm, even pressure may activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the branch responsible for rest-and-digest functions. Some small studies suggest this can modestly reduce subjective anxiety and improve self-reported sleep quality. The evidence base is still limited and effects vary by person, so we describe this as a promising comfort tool rather than a guaranteed fix.

The most consistent, well-established advice in sleep science remains simple: keep a regular sleep and wake schedule, keep your room cool and dark, and limit bright light exposure in the hour or two before bed.
