The Science of Energy, Light & Vibration
We want to be upfront: terms like "energy" and "vibration" get used two very different ways in wellness marketing. One refers to real, measurable physics and biology. The other refers to unproven ideas like raising your vibration, chakra alignment, or crystal frequencies — concepts that are not supported by physics or peer-reviewed medical research. Red and near-infrared light therapy (photobiomodulation) is a genuine area of active research. Specific wavelengths of light, typically in the 600–900 nanometer range, can penetrate skin and be absorbed by a component of cells called cytochrome c oxidase, potentially boosting mitochondrial energy production. Early clinical studies show encouraging results for things like skin appearance, minor joint discomfort, and muscle recovery, but the research is still developing, dosing isn't fully standardized, and it's not a cure for medical conditions.
Mechanical vibration has a documented effect on muscles through something called the tonic vibration reflex, where vibration stimulates involuntary muscle activation. This is the basis for vibration-based recovery and training tools used in some physical therapy and athletic settings.
Scent and aromatherapy work through a distinct, well-understood pathway: your sense of smell connects directly to the limbic system, the brain's emotion and memory center, more directly than any other sense. This is why scents like lavender are consistently reported to have a calming, mood-lifting effect in small studies — though most of this evidence relies on self-reported relaxation rather than objective medical outcomes.
